A Sabbath rest

On Sunday a Messianic Jewish rabbi brought the ministry of the Word during our Sunday morning worship gathering. His topic was honoring God with a Sabbath rest and the word resonated in my soul and challenged my life. A couple of years ago Jenn heard a message about taking a Sabbath and really setting aside a day of our week for God and getting away from the responsibilities of work. The rabbi hammered the point home further for me. We have denied ourselves and God one of the most important aspects the imago Dei when we do not set aside time in our lives to say, “we are God’s creation and we will live the way the Creator designed us”. Honoring the Sabbath is not about creating more rules for our lives but rather creating space in our lives to claim our place as God’s beloved. The Sabbath is a time to sleep, read, relax and spend time with family. It is not a time to escape the world through the world’s means. It is a time to escape the world and proclaim our conviction that God has created us for him and he is ours. How can that be when we never set aside time to focus completely on him? If we really believe that Jesus was the Christ and his proclamations about who God is are true how can we not be radically changed in all aspects of our lives including foregoing the life patterns we have created in exchange for the life rhythm God intended?
